Journeying with WCC’s Eco-Club

Webinar with the team – Ice Breaker Session

From learning about mushroom cultivation to designing digital posters, the Eco-club has done it all this year! The club’s aim is simple: to make students more environmentally conscious and to move towards a sustainable future in whatever way possible. The club, as a group effort, designed their own logo with the theme ‘Sinking Lands and Rising Seas’ and the members have worked well as a team this year.

Each activity, from the very first induction session, overflowed with fun as the girls turned up in shades of whites, greens and blues. Some even dressed up as their favourite movie character! Club President, Shakti Priya S (Psychology, Shift 1) along with Vice President, Jennifer Wilfred (Mathematics, Shift 1) have worked tirelessly in managing the club on digital platforms, and under the guidance of Ms. Benita Golda, have coordinated with speakers over many meetings and motivated the girls to make materials such as bio-enzymes.

Ex-club member, Samyukta D’Mel (III English) commented: “the coordinators would hold meetings to take suggestions for events and activities and would truly listen to the club members,” which is the main reason for the members sharing a strong relationship. As Shakti also added, “the club brings girls from different departments together to bond over various activities.”

Some of these activities included eco-printing to create fabric prints, and art from junk; as a celebration for Independence Day the club got out their thinking caps and came up with tricoloured vegan food that looked simply spectacular! The girls also designed a vegan diet and traced their carbon footprint for National Honey Bee Day and even held a session on aromatherapy. The club’s favourite event was the ‘Trash De’clutter’ webinar that focused on waste management, garnering nearly 400 participants and becoming a huge success.

On the side of fun that the eco-club is known for, they have a club tradition to dress up in shades of green for every club meeting and when asked what they would plan if the club was given an unlimited budget to host an event, the tight-knit group opted for a club outing to bond and learn together.

From collaborating with various teams and youth organisations, the club has been busy this academic year, both learning and teaching, to promote the club’s ideals of a sustainable future. These fun-filled activities have instilled a lot of knowledge and confidence that the students will surely be delighted to pass on to their juniors.
