Centre for Women’s Studies - A Step in the Right Direction

The Centre for Women’s Studies, WCC, aims to develop, promote and disseminate knowledge about women’s role in society.

During the induction programme on 26 August 2020, the Dean, Dr G Cynthia Jemima Swarna Valli, addressed students about the relevance of the Centre and highlighted its agenda and proposed activities for the academic year 2020-’21. Her presentation consisted of a detailed summary of what the Centre proposes to do, in answer to the questions, What is Women's Studies? Why a Centre for Women's Studies? What can be done through this Centre?

The Centre’s aim is to undertake, promote and coordinate both fundamental and applied research on women and development. It also facilitates training programmes for scholars, planners, administrators, members of women’s organizations and so on. One of its main goals is to bring about an attitudinal change for effective participation of women from all spheres of society.

The Centre organised a number of events from August 2020 to March 2021. To start with, there was an event titled Gender Equality - from Transition to Transformation by Dr. Vijaya, Head of Department of History at Quaid-E-Millath College for Women, Chennai, on 10 August 2020, with 256 students participating.

Another event, Women’s Safety in the Digital World was conducted by Dr. Varun Kapoor, IPS ADGP, at Rustamji Armed Police Training College, Indore. It was a regional event that was held on 26 August 2020 with a participation of 150 students and 10 teachers.

A webinar series for Awareness on Alcohol, Drug Addiction & Capacity Building was held with counselors from TTK Hospital, Chennai. It was a regional webinar that was conducted on 21 October - 6 November 2020. There was a total participation of 12 teachers and 320 students from Shift I & II.

A Logo Contest for the Centre for Women’s Studies was held at WCC in January 2021, where 30 students participated.

A Digital Youth Summit titled ‘My Voice our Future’ was jointly organised by the Department of Commerce and the Centre for Women’s Studies. This summit was held on the college campus on 13 February 2021.

A special event was held to celebrate International Women’s Day. ‘Women’s Narratives: Facing the Blank Page’, was the name of the international webinar that was jointly organised with IRC, WCC, on 8 March 2021. The resource person was Ms Cynthia Chirinda, a Zimbabwean author.

A debate titled “Is liberation of women leading them to success or failure?” was jointly organised with the Department of Tamil to celebrate International Women’s Day, with the anchors, Dr. Elizabeth Revathi (Shift-I) and Dr. Lakshmi (Shift-II). It was a regional event, held on 13 March 2021.
