Back to offline mode for physical fitness

The vibrant faces of all those who attended the camp and the staff

Jerlin A, the Chairperson for Games recently attended a sports camp and has set the road to normalcy back on track with regard to sports. The camp was conducted by Christian Sports Fellowship and Life Sports Academy and it provided a holistic experience which included spiritual and physical growth and improvement for all those who attended. “We were taught how to evolve into someone who is both spiritually and physically fit,” said Jerlin. The camp was held from 29 - 31 October at the Scripture Union Centre near Mahabalipuram.

Jerlin recalls the discipline with which the programmes in the camp were conducted. “We would be ready to get going by 6 am every morning. Then we would go to the ground and work on our fitness routines which included warm-up exercises and fitness training for about 2 hours. We were tested on our agility, stamina and endurance and were given training on how to improve ourselves in these respects.” After a short break, the students would attend scripture classes for about 2 hours, till noon. These classes were based on the biblical themes of Light, Salt and Seed respectively on each of the three days. “The staff made these classes interesting by engaging us with fun games and activities that helped us understand the word of God,” added Jerlin.

After their lunch break the students resumed training in football and cricket practice. Jerlin was a part of the football team and she recalled that this training offered much more than what she had expected or had experienced before. “ We were taught new methods of stepping up our game in such a short while - new techniques, tricks and tactics to improve our focus and quality of play. We were coached on how to tactfully use our presence of mind in the game and fine-tune our thinking.”

Jerlin claimed that this camp rejuvenated her physically and mentally and was a breath of fresh air after the long period of lockdown that deprived students of such activities, especially related to sports. “ I am looking forward to more of these experiences in future and I hope our students will also begin to attend such events where they get a chance to learn and experience what’s offered,” she said.

Sure enough, our students went on to win the Madras University Zonal Handball match held on the 17th of December. This marks the first of many achievements in sports with the campus coming back to life with offline classes. Manjusri, one of the players added, "The fourteen of us, including the substitute players, trained relentlessly for a week. While at it, we also had fun and enjoyed this experience which made it possible for us to have a positive outlook and thus win the match." The assistance from the staff also played a major role in training, she claimed. Apart from this, teams from our college have secured the first place in Badminton and third place in Table Tennis, in the Madras University Zonals held on the 4th of December.

Sports in WCC is back on track and will soon see many more victories.
