Policing during the pandemic

In a world that’s slowly inching towards recovery from the pandemic, an account of service providers and volunteers of the past year is nothing short of inspiring. Police inspector, D E Priya Dharshini’s experiences during this period depict her hardworking and committed service during the most challenging of times.

The transfer from State Crime Report Bureau to Elephant Gate Police Station in North Madras marked the start of the challenging pandemic period for Ms Priya Dharshini. Even though this transfer was as early as February 2020, the inspector she was replacing, had already been affected with COVID twice. Furthermore, numerous colleagues working at this station had also been affected by the virus. Therefore, in an attempt to offer herself some protection against the virus, she had to resort to homoeopathy tablets.

The month-long assignment at the EG police station included constant interaction with the general public in that area. She and her colleagues had to maintain COVID protocol, help at the COVID camps and work alongside the municipal corporation in cleaning the area and sprinkling bleaching powder on the streets.

The workload did not lessen even when she was transferred back to her own unit after a month, and then transferred to the Central Investigative Unit in March 2021. In fact, having contracted the virus herself during election duty in April, she went back to work after a 15-day break given to her. When asked about how she coped with the excessive tiredness that follows COVID, she responded that her commitments at work were crucial, thus keeping all thoughts of fatigue away.

Her dedication to work was recently noticed by the LGP Sanjay Rawther who gave her an Appreciation Award for the arrest of an unlicensed liquor seller.

While it's saddening to know that crime never abates even in the face of a pandemic, it is comforting to know that the police department does not rest either!
